Welcome to Walsenburg

Walsenburg is located on I-25 is at the crossroad of the Highway of Legends, Great Sand Dunes National Park (west off Highway 160), and the Spanish Peaks in Huerfano County.  This city is known as the Heart of Spanish Peaks Country and hosts the easternmost peak above 13,000 feet in the US.  It’s the northernmost town on the 82 mile Highway of Legends, a national scenic byway.

 

Fred Walsen settled nearby in 1870 and soon opened a mercantile. The town grew and Walsen assisted in the incorporation of the town on June 16, 1873, so they honored him by calling it Walsenburg.  Coal mining began in the region in 1876 and lasted more than 100 years. An estimated 500 million tons of coal were mined before operations ceased.

 

Lathrop, Colorado’s first state park, is located two miles west of downtown. It offers more than 1,600 acres and two big lakes for swimming, fishing, and even windsurfing. Martin Lake is 180 acres and is open to powerboats, jet skis, water skis, sail boating, and windsurfing. Boating is limited to hand-launched boats November 1 to April 1.  Horseshoe Lake is 150 acres is open to wakeless boating and is closed starting November 1 – the end of waterfowl hunting season. It’s popular for windsurfing, kayaking, and canoeing.  The lakes are stocked with bass, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, rainbow trout, walleye, and wipers. The park offers over 100 year-round campsites.  You will also find walking trails, a swim beach, and a playground.  A 9-hole Walsenburg Golf Course located in the park, which features a full restaurant and bar.

 

In addition to Lathrop State Park, you can camp in the San Isabel National Forest that borders the town to the south and west.  Right across from great fishing at Lathrop, you’ll find Walsenburg Reservoir which is typically stocked with rainbow trout and catfish.
