Aguilar which lies 20 miles north of Trinidad in southern Colorado is known as the “Gateway to the Spanish Peaks”. It’s a tiny community residing at 6,394 feet. Aguilar was founded in 1894 by cattleman and prominent pioneer José Ramón Aguilar. As one of Colorado's oldest towns, José Ramón Aguilar owned the land on which the town still stands and in 1888 the town was named in his honor. In its prime, Aguilar had more than 2,500 people living in town. This was during the coal mining boom of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The San Isabel National Forest lies to the west of town. It offers everything from dispersed camping and campgrounds, to mountain lakes and backcountry wilderness. Aguilar marks the eastern entry to Cordova Pass. You can take County Road 43.7, which goes through Gulnare toward Cuchara. The road changes to CR 46 until you reach Cordova Pass Campground when it becomes Forest Road 415. Although it is a high elevation dirt road that has many tight turns, the route itself is not considered to be difficult for most drivers. In the spring, access to Cordova Pass typically opens in late May or early June. The road closes when it becomes covered by snowfall, usually by early November. In good weather conditions, most passenger vehicles can easily access Cordova Pass. If rain or snow is possible, 4WD is recommended. This all lies in the Cuchara River Valley on the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristos.
