Trinidad is nestled in the beautiful Purgatoire River Valley at around 6,010 feet in elevation. Trinidad features a large, hilly historic downtown district. It’s one of the most southern Colorado towns on I-25, located thirteen miles north of the New Mexico border. Trinidad is the starting point for the famous 82 mile Highway of Legends Scenic Byway and located on the Historic Santa Fe Trail. Centrally located 190 miles from both Santa Fe, New Mexico and Denver Colorado, Trinidad is ideally situated for visiting Colorado or New Mexico.
Trinidad Lake lies within a 2,700 acre state park nestled in the foothills west of town. The park features year-round recreation such as camping, fishing, hiking, and seasonal boating. Trinidad Lake State Park offers 73 campsites, open year-round. The sites are split between two campgrounds. South Shore offers proximity to the lake, while Carpios Ridge is situated 150 feet above the lake with gorgeous views. They have sites suitable for both tents and RVs. Fishing is also available at Purgatoire River which flows by the town.
Fisher’s Peak State Park located just south of town is the state’s newest and 2nd largest state park at 19,200 acres. The park featuring a mixture of grasslands, mountains, and foothills. You have a chance to see wildlife including mountain lions, bears, and bobcats when you visit the park from sunrise to sunset. A limited number of hunters are awarded opportunities throughout the year through a lottery system. Thirteen miles of trails have been completed including the newest to the top of the peak's mesa. Future plans include equestrian facilities and trails, campgrounds and dispersed camping. Note pets are not allowed in the park.
Twenty minutes south of Trinidad is the world-class Whittington Center with more than 30,000 acres of premier hunting, shooting and outdoor recreation facility. West of Trinidad on Highway 12 you will find Bosque del Oso with hunting opportunties for elk, deer, black bear, turkey, small game and mountain lion.
Trinidad offers a 9-hole municipal golf course and two disc golf courses – 18 hole at Southside Park and a 27 hole course at Twisted Cedars (5 miles off Highway 12 at Cokedale).
