Pueblo

Known as “Steel City”, It Offer Recreation Like a Riverwalk as well as State Fair and Chile Festival

Welcome to Pueblo

Pueblo, situated on the southern front range at an elevation of 4,692 feet, is known as the “Steel City” as it has a center for steel manufacturing in Colorado. It’s the state’s ninth most populated city with about 112,000 residents as of 2020.  The city is about an hour south of Colorado Springs. It has had a strong agricultural sector as well as previoulsy being a large steel hub west of the Mississippi River. Today, only about 10% of employment in Pueblo is in the steel industry with many people turning to other sectors for employment.

Lake Pueblo State Park offers over 4,600 acres of water with a variety of year-round recreational activities. It’s centered around a giant reservoir, which is popular for camping (almost 400 campsites), boating and fishing. The most popular trail in Lake Pueblo State Park is the Arkansas Point Trail, a 2.3 mile hike to an overlook of the lake.  The Arkansas River west of town provides excellent trout fishing.

Pueblo Riverwalk is a one-mile-long path located in downtown Pueblo along the Arkansas River.  This trail which is open to hikers and bicycles, passes by more than 50 pieces of outdoor art and several restaurants. For a small fee, visitors can board a boat for a 25-minute narrated history of Pueblo and the Riverwalk.

Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum is located six miles outside of downtown Pueblo at the Pueblo Memorial Airport.  This 85,000-square-foot museum spans two hangars and almost a hundred years of aviation history. With over 50 vehicles and aircraft on display as well as multiple exhibits of uniforms, weapons, and more, this is a fantastic local museum.

The annual Colorado State Fair takes place at the end of summer, August into September, in Pueblo. This event transforms Pueblo State Fair Grounds into a huge, sprawling fair featuring rides, food, competitions, and even a petting zoo. Because the event is also a part of the Colorado Department of Agriculture, there are rodeos, livestock, and other animals.

Pueblo Chile & Frijoles Festival occurred every year in late September in downtown Pueblo.  The festival is a large celebration featuring numerous stands from local farms, food, drinks, and live music. The weekend-long festival draws in 100,000+ visitors who come to celebrate its famous local crop, the chile.
