The actual Fort was established by the Armyh in June 1858 to protect settlers from Utes. Kit Carson was stationed at Fort Garland and was part of the relocation of the tribes to reservations in the 1866-1867 period. Located on the southern tip of the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountain Range, this town located in Costilla county has an altitude of 7,936 feet with spectacular views of Mount Blanca. Other attractions in the San Luis Valley are the Great Sand Dunes National Park, hot springs, fishing and hiking.
